Our Adoption Process

Our personalized adoption process matches you to the perfect pet.

Thank you for choosing to adopt a shelter pet!

Our available pets are uploaded daily to our website. We are open by appointment, every day from 10 am to 5 pm. We encourage you to spend time getting to know prospective pets. Our adoption counselors can arrange meet and greets and dog to dog interactions. We will assist you through the adoption process in order to find your perfect pet match. Our process begins with an adoption application and an interview with one of our adoption counselors via phone or email. Then we’ll invite you to come in and meet with the animal. Everyone in the household is required to meet the pet before adopting. Once you’ve adopted, we will continue to support you and your pet at home with additional support from our adoption, training and medical teams. You’ll also learn about ways you and your pet can use the services at SASF – such as our Wellness Clinic and dog training courses.

SASF Adoption Standards & Polices

SASF strives to ensure that both our adopters and pets are provided with the most suitable match. Our adoption process is carefully designed to make sure our pets are placed in the most appropriate homes. To facilitate the best possible match between adopters and animals, our adoption counselors make judgements based on assessments from SASF’s temperament-testing procedures. This helps confirm the animals are ready for adoption and increases the likelihood of a successful match. Additionally, adopters are required to sign a contract agreeing to provide a specified level of care for their new pet. We have a strong emphasis on ensuring all our animals live indoors with their families, receive adequate exercise and attention, and are kept safe. It is important to note that our cats are expected to live safely indoors unless they are part of our Barn Cat or Advo-Cat Program.  To ensure the well-being of our animals and promote responsible pet ownership, we require that the adopter’s current pet(s) are up-to-date on veterinary care and spayed/neutered, unless there is a medical reason for not doing so. Furthermore, all of our available pets are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped for identification purposes. We believe these adoption standards and policies contribute to the overall welfare of our animals and help provide them with loving and appropriate forever homes.

Our shelter is located in Hampton Bays, New York.  All adopters must be able to visit the shelter upon adoption.
