A puppy mill or puppy farm is a commercial dog breeding facility. An operation in which the health of the dogs is disregarded in order to make money. Greed for profits is given priority over the well-being of the dogs, and they suffer. They live in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions without adequate veterinary care, food, water or socialization.
Female dogs are bred whenever possible with no recovery time between the many litters. These mother dogs reach a point of physical depletion. They can no longer produce puppies and they are killed. Dogs are kept in overcrowded cages, many times with only wire flooring. There are no walks or going outside for puppy mill dogs. They defecate and urinate, eat and sleep all in that same small cage, crowded together. Puppy mill puppies are sold to pet shops at a very early age, which is not good for the puppy. There is no regard for the well-being or lives of these dogs.
Puppy mill puppies are prone to congenital and hereditary conditions, There is no regard for the health or genetic issues that come with breeding dogs this way. Many go into their new homes with diseases ranging from parasites to pneumonia, and even distemper and parvovirus.
At SASF, we rescue puppy mill survivors, asking Puppy Mills to spare the lives and give us their mothers and fathers and unwanted puppies.
Adopting a puppy mill survivor is an amazing gift to give a dog that has been through so much. They require a loving and patient home to work with them and introduce them to the world they have never known.

Let our government know how you feel about puppy mills. We need stricter laws to protect these pets and to shut down puppy mills completely.
Contact your own NYS assembly member and state senator as well as the legislators listed below. Let them know existing laws do not protect animals in puppy mills and how these animals are currently being treated.
